Branding Photography vs Headshots: What's the Difference and Which Do You Need?

I get this question constantly: "Jose, do I need a headshot or branding photos?"

The answer depends entirely on how you use your image to make money. A headshot and a branding session are two completely different products that solve two completely different problems. Let me break it down so you can stop guessing.

What a Headshot Actually Is

A headshot is one or two polished portraits of your face. That's it. It's clean, professional, and designed to do one job — make you look like someone worth doing business with.

Here's what a headshot session looks like with me:

  • Duration: About 45 minutes
  • Deliverables: 1-5 retouched images plus your full session gallery (up to 20-25 unretouched JPEGs depending on your package)
  • Outfit changes: 1-2
  • Location: Studio or one outdoor location
  • Starting at: $349

A headshot is a tool. You use it on LinkedIn, your company's team page, your email signature, your Zoom background, your business card. It answers one question: "What does this person look like?"

If someone Googles your name and clicks on your LinkedIn profile, your headshot is the first impression. That's its job. Nothing more, nothing less.

What Branding Photography Actually Is

Branding photography is a full visual content library. We're not just capturing your face — we're capturing your world. Your workspace, your tools, your products, your process, your personality, your lifestyle.

Here's what a branding session looks like:

  • Duration: 1.5 to 4 hours depending on the package
  • Deliverables: 30 to 75+ images (3-10 retouched, plus your full gallery of unretouched JPEGs)
  • Outfit changes: 3-6+
  • Locations: 1-3
  • Starting at: $699

A branding session gives you months of content. Instagram posts, website hero images, about page photos, service page visuals, email headers, story backgrounds, course thumbnails, media kit assets — all from one session.

The difference between headshots and branding photography isn't just the number of photos. It's the intent. Headshots say "here's my face." Branding photos say "here's my entire world, and here's why you should be part of it."

Who Needs a Headshot

You need a headshot if you're:

  • A corporate employee who needs an updated photo for the company website
  • A professional who needs a polished LinkedIn profile image
  • Someone starting a new job or getting a promotion
  • A team member who needs to match the rest of your company's headshot style
  • Anyone who needs one great photo — fast

Headshots are straightforward. You show up, we nail the lighting and your expression, and you walk away with a photo that works everywhere a professional portrait is needed.

Where headshots go:

  • LinkedIn profile
  • Company team page
  • Email signature
  • Business cards
  • Conference speaker bios
  • Zoom/Teams profile

Who Needs Branding Photography

You need branding photography if:

  • You are your brand — solopreneurs, coaches, consultants, freelancers
  • You sell services where trust and personality matter — estheticians, realtors, therapists, fitness trainers
  • You need content for your website, social media, and marketing materials
  • You're launching or relaunching a business
  • You're tired of using the same headshot everywhere and need visual variety
  • You create courses, podcasts, or educational content

The common thread? These are people whose business is them. An esthetician's clients aren't booking because of the clinic's corporate brand — they're booking because they trust her. A realtor doesn't win listings because of Keller Williams' logo — they win because the seller trusts them.

If your face, your personality, and your expertise are what drive your business, you need branding photography.

Where branding photos go:

  • Website hero images, about page, services pages
  • Instagram grid posts and story backgrounds
  • Facebook cover photos and ads
  • Email marketing headers and welcome sequences
  • Course materials and digital products
  • Business cards, flyers, and print marketing
  • Media kits and press pages

You Can Do Both in One Session

Here's what a lot of people don't realize — you can absolutely knock out both in a single session.

We start with headshots. Clean background, professional lighting, two outfit changes. You get your polished corporate portraits in the first 30-45 minutes.

Then we shift gears. We change the setup, move to a different location, bring out your products or tools, and spend the next hour or two building out your branding content library.

This is actually my favorite way to work because you're already warmed up. By the time we get to the branding portion, you're relaxed, you know how to work with me, and your expressions are natural. The photos from the second half of a session are almost always the best ones.

How the Pricing Works for a Combined Session

If you want headshots and branding, you'd book a branding package — because it already includes portrait-style shots. You don't need to book both separately. A Brand Starter session at $699 gives you 1.5 hours, 3 retouched images, 30+ gallery images, and 3 outfit changes. That's enough time to get your headshots and lifestyle content.

The Bottom Line

Get a headshot if you need a clean, professional portrait for LinkedIn, your company page, or your business card. It's quick, it's affordable, and it does the job.

Get branding photography if you're building a personal brand and need a library of images that tell your story across every platform. It's an investment in months of content.

Get both if you want the efficiency of knocking it all out in one session.

Either way, stop using that photo from 2019. Your business deserves better.
